what stops belt

for the life of me i cant see what is supp ossed to stop belt from turning when you push clutch in to shift so it dont grind! :reading_the_manual:

Is this a horizontal shaft tractor or vertical?

The belt guides at each end and the little nub on the clutch arm is usually what does it.
Do you have a model number of the tractor?

917 255911 ya i did see that nub ur talkin bout and it does come down against it but it just dont stop it didnt know if the belt was to narrow or what so it was sittin to far into the drive pully

Here's a page out of a manual for one of these, not sure what model yours is. But they are real close to the same.

I'm thinking the belt guide on the clutching idler helps slow/stop the belt (Fig 38)

its always done it a little but since  i put the new belt on its really bad and i know its on rite and its loose when clutch is in but it wont stop! its the belt it calls for or so they said! but it seems to sit way down in the pully on the motor. belts are so high priced i really dont want to just experiment with a wider one till i talked to someone here

Sears almost never used a normal sized belt. Unfortunately, sometimes you have to try a couple... But I am very suspect of a belt guide being in the wrong place, bent, loose, somehow not holding the belt loose on the pulley when clutched. The ones at the engine would be my guess.

ill check it out closer before i try belts now that i know where to look the old belt did break and made a heck of a noise so what ur sayin about somethin bein bent is makin alot of sence! thanks!!!!!!

Alan, that is one of a few Craftsman II manuals I have hidden away. They changed model #'s like clock work, but most of the tractors were the same to a point. Even the old GTV is similar on the belt drive.

It looks to be a littel different, but my '77 16/6 has the grind if I don't physically stop and let belt to stop. My brake lining is shot and I know that need to be adjusted correctly to prevent that grind and complete belt stoppage.

The picture Kenny posted though looks to be a different set up. MH81 might be right, that belt maybe just a tad too short and won't dis-engage.

Or the belt is just new and grabbing better. I usually stop to change gears. I have 2 of these out back and a Craftsman III. Just hard to get out and lay on the cold ground to see how it works for sure.
