We have a similar thing at our county fair, "bake in"  they call it. Kids are given recipe a few weeks earlier to practice, but then they bring everything into one fo hte buildings and they make/bake/cook it right there and then get judged. My daughter has gotten high of 4th out of like 18 kids. My nephew, yes, nephew, beat out all the girls yrs ago when he was in 4H.

Thanks everyone, BRILEY finished outside of the top 3 in her preliminary heat, only 1st place moves into the final from each category. This event is really growing, there were over 100 kids this year and last year there were only 48 kids.

This Food Challenge is pretty tough, each kid is given ingredients and 40 minutes to decide and prepare a dish. Then they are judged on several points like how it looks on the plate, what nutritional benefits are in it. Cost per serving, they also have to answer any questions that the judges come up with.

Marty, Your 4H program should have both Team Food Challenge and Individual Challenge. If not I would check into those programs as it will bring more kids into 4H up there.

We have a team challenge they call shopping bag, a group from each club gets togeter, then they go in a room and are given say "xx.xx" amount of money and have to shop from a list to get the best value for their money.

The bake in is individual, they are given the recipe ahead of time though, then have to show up and bake it right then and get judged. Leftovers are given to the audience....some of it should get canned though, some of the kids just don't got it.

We have so much going on during our fair, not sure if they they could squeeze more into the week. Not sure they would do it off season though, maybe something to suggest.
