So....what is the make??

I believe it to be an Izusu 3AB1, it looks very close to what few photos I can find with Google. Your manual helped. Thanks and that engine was used in 2710 I think was the right model number.

"Gutbrod" I can't believe someone would try and market something with a name like that hanging on it. That's worse than my last name.  :(

Its better than the paint color BMW used for a few years.  It is a dark red with some orange in it.  They call it hellrot.

Not any different that some of the American named cars. That just happens to be German.

Jeff Lauber has weighed in and thinks it's a Yammar engine, model TK353. I will have to do some more checking on it, but would be very happy if it's a Yammar.

Thanks Jeff!!

from the looking at yanmars i dont think it is one, this engine is a 4 cylinder but it has that same style tag on the injector pump as yours

Brian, I see some numbers on the side of the block.

Those numbers look like: 3AB1 and 1.777L

The Mitsubishi diesel in my HDT has numbers cast in that same area. If I remember right, mine are K3D (engine model) and 0.979L (displacement).

Thanks Daniel, I totally missed that, it's lying on that side down. I will have to pick it back up and look at it closer.

It may be a boat anchor if I can't find parts for it. I'm not having much luck finding any place that has used parts for it. I need a flywheel and starter. I have a flywheel off of a 4 cylinder Isuzu, but don't know if it would work on a 3 cyl. engine if it will fit.

Wow, 38hp would make an awesome GT diesel!! Maybe a D-250 on steroids. :D  It would be great if you can find a flywheel, and starter, so you could test it out.

Gutbrod is a well-respected line of German compact tractors.  I think they also built the M-F "Elf" (elf means eleven in German).

The term "hellrot" is German for "light red"-- which might actually be pink... though I doubt the Germans would want to color an engine Pink (rose in German).

FWIW,

Smitty
