So I stopped at the house and picked up my 300/312/314/316K service manual and found this picture of the 312 with the grill installed:

Looks like it needs the later style bar grill painted green.  That is much easier to find than the earlier wire grill on the 300/316K machines.

Just bringing this back up to the top...

Swapping the seat from the 140 over to the 312. I also started working on the fiberglass hood which has received previous repairs. I am considering a replacement. Here are a few pics:

Going to pick up another hood from Lyall and might save this project for later.

A surprise bump on the 312 thread!

A member of my church is starting the diesel mechanic program at the local community college.  He wants to use the K301 as a project.  I need to get the parts and he (with the help of his instructor) will go through it.  Any suggestions where to get GOOD parts?  I am not sure if it will need bored and I am pretty sure the rod broke before it was parked.  This one is getting set up for duty with the 49 blower.

Supraben are you out there?

So they are going to build you a 'blown' K301?

then again the visual image of a GMC 6-71 on a dozen K301s is quite amusing.

I think a bit of the Kirkengines.com Killer Kohler info will get incorporated in the k301 along the way.

Travis, Our Sponsors here most all carry OEM and after market Kohler parts. I also use NAPA for some of mine because I can get them quicker, usually the same day or the next, they also carry after market parts.

The rebuilder removed the pan and found that it tossed the connecting rod at suspected. When it broke it also wiped out the oil splasher. He pulled the info on the engine and I am am pretty sure it is the original k301 to the tractor with a '77 production date. The class instructor suggests a .010" overbore since there is some scoring in the cylinder wall. I do know in the past it received a light hone with a new rod and piston. The crank also needs turned .010" under which I am guessing is why it threw the rod the 2nd time. This one does NOT have the balance gears. Woohoo!

My parts list so far includes:
- .010" piston
- .010" rod
- gasket kit
- Kohler/Carter 26 carb

Considering the following mods while it is apart:
- Roller crank bearings (from MidwestSupercub which is about 40 miles from me)
- Kirk crank weight
- Kirk Pointslayer
- Kirk Billet engine breather cover

Got some news on the engine today.  It seems it was bored in the past and will take a .020" over to clean up the cylinder walls.  Here are some pics for reference.

Parts went to the machine shop today.  The shop is going to check valves, guides, and other stuff.  I told them I want to do it right the first time.  More info from the shop later in the week or the beginning of next.

Got word that the bore on the block are beyond specs and cannot be saved.  It also significantly damaged the block when it tossed the rod and the crank is out of spec.  Time to find a different block and continue the project.  The only bad thing is that this original block did not have the balance gears.

Hey Travis,

I may have a lead on a 301 for you. I'll find out more tomorrow. I'll PM you with the details when I get them.
