Holly OMG what a "lack of cleaning program" the previous owner

had going on with that engine.

How does the bore look? Hard to tell in those 2 pics, but nothing

obvious there.

You may get away with just rings and gaskets.

It will take a lot of cleaning. The bore seems to be smooth, though I have not checked to see if it's out of round or tapered. As you can see in the picture of the cylinder, it appears that the poor compression was primarily caused by blow by. It would sure be nice to only have to replace rings and gaskets!

Should I replace the crank shaft bearings, or any other bearings, while it is all apart?

A lot of carbon on the head gasket maybe a leak? Can you salvage the piston? Looks like you had some bad rings too. I'm debating whether or not to rebuild my Tech 12 on the MF it runs good but I would feel better if I did.

I hope I can salvage the piston. It supposedly smoked, so it was one of my top priorities to rebuild the engine (primarily for my health) (did not want to breath the smoke!) When we found out how bad the compression was, and that there was blow by, I'm glad I did not decide to let it go for a while.

I was surprised how well the hone works on my Wisconsin ABN.

After looking back at the pic of the piston, I would say the oil rings are worn out. If the bore checks okay, give it a good hone and new rings.

hopefully that's all it needs just tweak it a touch and put it back into service.

Thanks, I hope so! I want to do things right, but the less money spent on it, the better.

Iam sure you'll find lots of places to put the extra money some where in the tractor.

I did do a little checking the other day on the bore. There was at least one place that I could start to stick a .014 feeler gauge between the piston skirt and cylinder wall. It seems tighter at the top and bottom of the bore.

Sounds like it might be a little egg'd at the bottom. Do you have access to a T gauge set or something else the would accurately check the bore?

No, I don't. I wonder if O' Reilly Auto Parts would loan me one?
