I am going to have a guy turn these into stickers and put them on my hard hat.  One of my grandfathers favorite sayings when I was a kid!

We had an old fellow here in the shop, who has since retired, and he always used that little phrase. I use it from time to time myself now.

I have used that phrase many of times. Usually though there was more than one monkey.

I always heard it both way, Like a monkey, and like a bunch of monkeys.

I think it depends on the situation is there more than one monkey you are referring to?
