Was wondering if the transaxle or variable speed is normally noisy on these tractors. Mine is, almost sounds dry when in 4th gear high speed. Also, this tractor is VERY fast for a garden tractor, is this normal?

Welcome and 4th gear top speed is about 9MPH. Tranys I find is nosier in reverse but usually can't here it because of the engine noise. I have one that's converted to electric drive this is how I know.

I have two mf10g's and two 12g's, all have some tranny noise. One was really noisy but I used it for years with no trouble, eventually I swapped the trans with one out of a parts tractor just because of the noise. The one I swapped is a lot quieter but still makes some noise, especially in reverse. I have had the trans apart and couldn't find any reason for the noise, so I don't worry about. My father has a JD212 (same transaxle as the mf) that was really noisy and used it for years with no problems. He finally swapped it with one from a mf10.

The mf10's & 12g's use a peerless 2300 series transaxle. I see them on ebay often. You could try to find a parts tractor or a lawn&garden junk yard also. The John Deere 210,212,214 and 216 use the same trans also, you just have to swap the drive pulley and the shifter. What is wrong with the trans that is in it now? Were are you located, I know of a L&G junkyard that has them here in upstate NY.
Good luck and welcome 2 GTTalk

The trans works fine, just noisy when the tractor is under load or when going from load to coast. I'm just outside of Buffalo.

I think they all make noise to some extent. My Massey MF12G makes noise, it isn't all that loud either but you can hear it. I believe it mainly comes from the lash between the gears which is why you hear it more so when going from load to no load. I wouldn't worry about the noise unless it starts to make a clunking sound.

I have a spare tranny laying around. The tractors I use have some noise in 4th. But they probably need fresh oil. Maybe yours needs the same?

I was gonna change the gear oil in the trans to 85-140w. I really like this tractor, just put 25x8x12 ITP mudlites on it, looks good!
