I bought this engine this summer when I started collecting small engines.

That collection never really took off. This was my favorite engine I did manage to find.

It was rebuilt by the previous owner and runs like a top. You could remove the dents in the tank and give it a fresh coat of paint and have yourself a very nice engine.

Asking $150

Adam, is the S/N really 546?  That means April 1933.

That is one old ZZ.

Briggs didn't start using that style aluminum tag until 1942-3 sometime. A 33 ZZ would have a brass tag.

I was thinking the same thing. 33 would have had the cast shroud instead of the tin one too. I wonder what the deal is with that number, mistamped?

This is a later model ZZ. I want to say the previous ouwner / rebuilder said it was a 40's engine.

You are correct about the cast shroud as well. People have been reproducing this style Briggs tag for years, so my guess is its a replacement. Briggs used a very tiny head screw to hold the tag on for the first couple years of this tag design. In 45-6 they started using brass rivets to secure them, and a couple years later they started using aluminum rivets. Also, the early design of these tags up to about 46 were not made aluminum, and the wording on them were different. Below are some examples of different Briggs tags. The first is an original 46 tag, the second is an original 48 tag, and the 3rd is a reproduction tag. Thanks

This is how I learn something everytime I read a thread on here.  I did not know the details down to S/N tags.  Ya'll impress me with what you know.
