Got a hold of a horizontal shaft Kohler 18 hp opposed twin in supposedly running condition. I need some help (will get numbers off it soon). What Kohler came on the Craftsman Gt6000, and what adapter needs to bolt to the flywheel to make the swap from Briggs to Kohler?

Sorry, no help here. My 1994 GT6000 has a vertical shaft Kohler twin on it.

No, I haven't got all the parts to the kohler yet, it has a remote oil filter and it isn't in my possession yet, but he still has it, and it has my name on it. So not pulling an engine till I hear another engine running.

I wish I could help you too but I have no info. Does anyone know which/when the engines changed from vertical to horizontal? I know where I can get a real nice gt6000 and might check it out if it's a horizontal shaft.

That engine is very much like the KT series 2 engines. Those engines were used in the JD 317 and in some of the Cub Cadet models. The adapters for those tractors will likely fit the engine, but what do you need on the end of the adapter? Shaft diameter and keyway size or drive pin etc. would be needed to find a candidate for direct bolt on.  Having one made will run you big$$

I found the correct adapter off a magnum 20 for Ayp tractors on eBay, and going to check the pattern and buy it.

I have no idea about the swap, but that looks like the engine in my 6000.

Casey, glad to hear you are getting an engine you feel more comfy with. I've been feeling bad for you that the briggs is such a PITA, especially after you've been so good to it.

The vert to horizontal change had to be between 88 and 95, but not sure beyond that. We had an 88 that was horiz and I have a 95 that's a vert. It would've happened whenever Electrolux took over building for Sears, but IDK the year.

Good luck with the swap.

Ran the codes of my magnum and learned it was built in 1988, same year as the Caterpillar, scary good sign lol.
