Morning All,

Yesterday I had a bit of trouble the starter drive came off the engine while the Tecumseh 12 hp was blowing snow it quickly destroyed the flywheel .I remove the engine from the old 1220, I tried searching the forum for a replacement story but came up short.Someone had the same tractor but unknown how it ended up.

Does any one know what would basically bolt in ? I was hoping for a Briggs or Kohler replacement . Sort of need this working as we are having a old fashioned winter .Any information would be great it is - 16 out there this morning but supposed to warm up a little slowly. Even if I could find a flywheel sooner or lately I would be facing either a blown engine or dead ignition. Thanks Mike

As much as I hate swapping out the original engine..... I would personally look for a 12HP wisconsin (TRA12D) to put in its place.

That will bolt right up and no hacking of the hood or sheet metal would be necessary.

Not to mention the fact that a Wisconsin is a much better engine than anything else you can get now.

The trick of course is to get one, really can,t complain the the Tecumseh was 43 years old and it was the starter drive that knock it out.I will keep looking something will turn up. Merry Christmas to All.

Why not just replace the flywheel and fix the starter? Was there something wrong with the tecumseh

Around here it means trying to find another Tecumseh which would be as hard as finding another engine that would not have the module troubles that you can get.I do have a newer square type starter if that,s what happens the engine could be repaired. Maybe that is what I will have to do patch the original engine till  spring.

I have a dead 8 hp Tecumseh engine from a snow blower sitting in my shed.  If you think it will work, I'm just up the 401 from you.

So yesterday I was feeling better so I went outside and pulled the 12 HP Tecumseh out of a dead 1976 Sears tractor, carried it into the basement and lugged down a 12 volt battery and booster cables pulled the spark plug and briefly cranked it several times. It had great spark ! So the guys problem was the ratty wiring in his old tractor. The Sears had a beautiful muffler too bad it would not fit. After changing the governor linkage over thought this will work !! Then after pulling both pulleys off the two engines found the Bolens 1969 had a 1 inch crank and the 1976 Sears had a 1 1/8 inch crank !! Dang ! All that for nothing back to the drawing board.Don,t know if the machine shop can open up the Bolens pulley and make a new key way. Cheers Mike
