I just purchased a briggs and stratton to what I believe is a 5s engine. It looks identical to another 5s I have and is all complete and in unrestored good condition. I think it was once used on a mopad. the question I have is did some of these motors come out without a I.d. plate? It doesn't show any evidence of ever having a I.d. tag on it.  :help:

Most of them had the tag on the piece of shroud that went around the cylinder. Do you have that piece of shroud without holes where a tag would have been?

Doug is right, look for 4 holes on the tin around the cyl. jug.  Post a picture or 2, someone should be able to confirm an id. :camera:

This one is missing that piece of shroud. Usually when I see them broke off, I can still see a piece of the shroud on the bolt that hold it down. This bolt is completely tightened down. And it looks like it's been that was for a long time. And il post a couple today

Looks like it could be a 5S. You're missing the piece that goes over the head too. My guess would be that someone took the head off and didn't put it all back together. Even if Briggs had left the tag off, they would have still used the piece of shroud for cooling. With that belt clutch, it may be off a reel mower.

Yup, missing pieces, It would not have left the Briggs factory without the tinwork around the jug.  Nice little engine though, you should be able to find what is missing without much trouble.

Check this thread for a pic of the shroud you are looking for  the pic is in reply #25.  It should be the same for both the N and 5s.  I might possibly have a used one, but won't know until this weekend.  I will try to remember to check, If I do it's yours for the price of shipping it.
