Many years ago Daniel had a cow that was "on strike" for better quality feed and purposely went dry.  This photo shows Dan explaining to Bessie what happens to "non dairy" cows.  His reference to the local butchers add in the newspaper, complete with pictures, was enough to convince Bessie to produce milk once again.  Bessie was the farms highest producer from that day forward and Dan, being the softheart he is, routinely snuck Bessie extra molasses, mineral block, and even fresh corn stalks right out of the fields.

It was seemingly odd that Rufus consulted Elsie for strategies on getting the best for the least on Black Friday, but somehow, he always got everything on the list.
