Almost 2 years ago, I bought this V4-8 from member DH1.  Doug to it to Will's place in Canada, then Nutndun bought an HD-12 that Will picked up for him up there.  So George & Grand picked it up and took it to his place in PA.  Brian (TD&H) had intended to up up soon after to bring it to me as he went to get his stuff at George's place.  Plans went bad on Brian then, but he made the trip & just dropped off the V4-8 today.  Hasn't ran at least for 2 years and has been outside.  But you know, I put gas in it, gave it a pull, and the darned thing started up!

Here she is.

The recoil had no spring inside, so I removed the assembly & replaced with a starter/generator pulley so I wouldn't have to rewind the recoil by hand.

DSC00078.JPG

The recoil catch that bolts to the flywheel is almost worn completely out as well, so I need to find a better one.

Once I got it started, I wanted to give it a drive, but the variator was rusted solid & would NOT budge.  I had to take it apart, then use a press to push the center off the sliding sheave.  Then I had to do a lot of sanding & polishing on the center bushing & main shaft before it would slide right.  Finally got it repaired & works perfect.

DSC00086.JPG

Of course it needs the carb cleaned & adjusted to run great, but it doesn't smoke at all.  Head gasket is leaking, but no biggie.  Lots more to be done, but nothing major.  For the time being she will not be restored, just mechanically repaired.

Anyway, it was dark, but I HAD to take a video while driving it.  Was a cold rain mixed with sleet, and most of the video is too dark to see, but you can see it's the V4-8 on my first drive with it!

Thanks Doug, Will, George & George, and last but not least, Brian!

Very nice! That looks like a very solid machine, and with a little love I'm sure it will be tip top!

Nothing better than a new toy to play/work on! Glad it is up and running! Wish my V4-8 was in that good of shape!

Glad it made it to it's new home, and you got it moving already.

I see the chrome headlight trim rings have tarnished a bit since

I polished them. :smilewink:

No, that was the one he cross-bred with the Massey's and came up with an Elf.  :D

Well, since George's HD-12 was up there at the same time, I guess we'll need to do a paternity test to prove which Hog is truly the father of ELF!  :smilewink:

So, it is a "well traveled" tractor.

Glad you finally got a new toy to add to your collection.

Never mind Mister. I have pictures of all the goings on around here. Before, during, and after

that whole episode, especially, "during". In fact some aren't even suitable to be posted here

on this family site.

So, don't even think about trying to horn in on being a mom or dad or whatever, to ELF. It's

simple. There is no German in a Bush Hog! And we all know that ELF is German. There's

even a decal on it that says so. I have a pic of that too.

If that's not enough for you, here are some pictures, but you're more than welcome to

come up here and do some tests anyways. :smilewink:

Had a few minutes this morning to tinker, and I mean just a few.  But Josh had tossed an old push mower into the scrap pile...Tecumseh engine.  Took the recoil spring out of it, and only had to twist a bigger hook on the outer end & it works in this recoil.  I also sourced the large aluminum starter cup brand new.  I figured it would be NLA, but they had several in stock.

Got a head gasket coming too.

Yes, I had to play with the thing, but man was I tired when I finally called it a day!
