Today I read an article about drivers and texting in the state of N. Y. The state has purchased 32 large size SUV for the trooper to use which place the trooper above most passenger vehicles. The Trooper while  driving  can look down and observed if the driver of a vehicle is texting and then quess what happens-you got it.

Oh I forgot one other important thing to this story, the SUV's are not marked.

This was place just for your information.

Dick

While I see the value in reducing TexT n drive' they will have to write a lot of tickets to pay for those special vehicles where regular cars and roof mounted cams could do the same. Oh well, I guess that's why I'm not in charge...

What about the dangers of driving while watching others text and drive?  They don't mention that, do they?

Tn has a semi they use for the same thing. It is marked but since it is a semi and not a car people ignore it.

As someone who spends a fair amount of time on 4 or 6 lane roads in a metro area, I would rather drive next to someone drinking than someone texting. Idiots.

I found it somewhat difficult to talk on the phone while driving around town.  On the highway, it was a breeze.

Texting and driving around town is just crazy.  I see so many all over the road or completely oblivious or both.

I hope they catch lot's of them and have those babies paid for in no time.

I think it's a problem and needs to be addressed.  I hope they catch a few speeders too.

I spend a lot of time using a cell phone while driving.

I use a Bluetooth earpiece, handsfree.  Dialing does not happen unless I'm sitting still.

Any other way is suicidal.  Locally, we had a girl cross the interstate into the other lane and clobber a semi head on.  It was all over but the crying.  I saw the SUV she was driving on the way back from a tractor delivery, I rode behind down the service road along side the interstate.  It was on a rollback truck.  The SUV was wider than the truck.  The semi blew it open.

I saw that and said to myself, my kids will not ever have the right to text and/or use a phone other than hands free while driving.

All I can say about large police SUV s  is that if somebody accidently runs into them while texting , the texter loses.  Most troopers retire or move into other job responsilities before their hyper driving skills subside .

Multi tasking while driving should be left to the true professionals.

Around here they just use the SUV's they confiscate from the criminal's, mainly drug dealers.  But actually it is the motorcycle cops that get the most texters.  There is to much distracted driving IMO and I'm glad they are doing something about it.

That is stupid.  How can I control what you are doing when I text you? How do I even know what you are doing? This "I am not responsible for anything I do it is all some elses fault" mentality in this country pisses me the off.

I am with Cat on this one!! I would say90% of the time when some driver is putting my safety at risk by doing stupid things they are on a cell phone instead of watching what they should be. I once had one driver pass me 5 times in 4 miles and the phone was on top of the sterring wheel and she was texting.

I gave up the cell altogether - it was more headache than it was ever worth.  Never did like the bosshole calling me and asking where I was and what I was doing every little bit.

My cousin - same age as me [43] was killed on his motorcycle last year [2012] when a teenager pulled out in front of him while texting.  The bike hit right in the drivers door of the teens car and both drivers were killed instantly.
