A friend came over today.  Tells me he has a neighbour that has a 317 John Deere with mower.  He doesn't think it runs says it doesn't look to bad.  He said I can get it for free.

Is eight enough??

One 425 JD in good running condition.

Two 1050 bolens in good running condition

One Cub Cadet in good good condition

One 1050 bolens needs tranny

One 425 JD need engine rebuild

Two parts Cub Cadets

Do I really need a non running 317?  I have space, a heated shop.   I will complete the other projects and need another one.

I might have a line on a free ford and sear too.

Guess time will tell

I say grab it. It's worth a good price if you can get it running. They are a good solid hydo drive tractor with 2 hyd. valves and a lot of available attachments.

I can easily find $400 in parts if the tractor was parted out.  I would grab it as free is always better than cheap.    However, free is not necessarily cheap...  :rolling:  :rolling:

It is not a matter of NEED, it is a matter of wanting it to restore or to use.

And the price is right, so do you have it home yet?

I was trying to convince myself I didn't need another tractor.  But I failed miserably.  I will be talking to my buddy to see when I can get the 317.  I might be spring or at least a warm day.  Call me wimpy but getting a tractor at 0 F or -20 c is not my idea of fun.  Probably even less, the guy wanting to get rid of it.

When I get I'll post some photos.

I can't believe you have to ask, but I would grab it, and I fully understand the concept of free isn't free. I have a hard time giving things away, and that's when I try, so getting more isn't necessarily a problem. I know some people in my neighborhood who wouldn't agree with that, but life isn't about what other people think. Anything more than oxygen, water, protein, and sleep is a luxury, so you really don't need this JD, but don't pass up a gift. Remember, the guy who's passing it on probably paid a good price for it, or at least wants it to go to a good home. Give it a good home.

OK so heres where I stand on the 317.  I bought one today. Apparently the starter is shot.  Gentleman who owned said the starter packed it in and as he had a recent surgery he could not fix it.  So he bought I think it was a sears sitting there.  That was 5 or 6 years ago and the 317 sat in his shed unit he decided to get rid of it. $350.  Its clean, has wheel weights mower deck even operators manual.

Now the free 317 I was talking about last year is still avaiable and I have arrangements to pick it up Friday night.

Here is photos of of the $350 unit

I post photos of the free unit when I get it.

You did good on that one.  Cast iron wheel weights, deck looks solid, nice seat = easily worth $350

You did very well, if either of them have a Series II engine then will have no oiling issues and that is a very capable tractor to do anything you want with it.

Yep!, for 350 that's a real sweet 317. It looks low hours and well maintained. Original seat by the looks of it. They have a strong hydro and rear end.
