A guy wants me to trade him my JD420 for his JD330 plus some cash...

I'm tempted as this would finally put me in the Black Smoke Owner's Group, but I'm unfamiliar with the 330 and not sure it would be good to trade off my 420, even if it's a good deal.

My 420 has a FEL (what the guy really wants) plus 3ph, scraper, snowblower, 3 spool hydraulics and 60" deck.  It's been a good tractor, even though it has 2300+ hours on the meter. I don't really need the FEL as my Bolens HT23 has one, and I've used it a lot since buying it--in fact, I'm collecting the parts so I can install PS on it now.

I know the JD330 has the 3TN68 Yanmar diesel, which is what is tempting me, but it also doesn't have power steering, nor does it have a 3ph,and only a one spool hydraulics IIRC (I drove it around once for about 5 minutes). It does have a mower deck, but I have 5 other tractors with decks on them, so it isn't a of much interest to me.

I guess what I'm looking for is an idea as to the strengths/weaknesses of the JD330--it's smaller--will my snowblower fit it? I know the cooling systems were not as big as they should have been, any other warts?

I know they only built it in 1986--are there any other JD GTs that are similar in terms of parts compatibility, etc.?

As always, I appreciate any feedback anyone might have...

Regards,

No no no. Dont do it. 330 has only one hydraulic spool and no power steering. Also a lot smaller tractor. Yes you get the diesel but if you really want a diesel wait for the 332 or better yet a 430.

I would keep the 420. It has a lot of goodies on it!

I'd also say wait for a better fit to your needs. The 330 is a basic diesel tractor. A diesel re power of the 420 might be a way to go. The other thing to consider when you get to this size is a SCUT. You then get 4wd, rear pto, 2 speed axle, dif lock, 3pt hitch and power steering all as standard equipment.

If you reread your post, I think you will talk yourself out of it.

Yeah, I wasn't that impressed with the 330--just wanted to make sure I wasn't overlooking something that might change my mind... thanks for your input.

Hi,

I would say with all your other stuff, (you don't need the 420 with fel) and you want a diesel.

Go for it. But he needs to pay you!

A 420 with fel-$3000.

A 330 with deck only-$1500.

Just my opinion.

Chuck

Smitty, I have a 318, which is pretty much the gas version of the 330. I like it, but I bought too soon. On my acreage the 420 is the minumum Gt I should have.  The 420 gives you diferential lock which you won't find on the 330.  My brother has a 420 and has proven clearly to me how much more Tractor it is than the 318.

As much as I like the diesel in my Ford, I sure would not give up a 420 for Black Smoke.

Now if the guy were offering to trade a 430 for your 420 that would be worth considering gowing for the Black!!

Yes, tell the guy to get a 430, then you'll do the swap.  A good 430 would be a decent swap to a 420 with a FEL.
