Not sure if I can bring Dad home for a while this afternoon or not.  Freezing rain now & I can see ice on our road.  No matter what, I have to get to town for more kerosene to keep our house warm, but getting Dad out when there's any ice at all is out of the question.  The rehab have had Dad out walking several times now, and he's doing great!  His short term memory is terrible still, and sure hope it returns.  He told Mom yesterday nobody had worked with him rehab wise, then my niece who manages the rehab called to let us know how much he had been walking.   He had already forgotten.

Spoke with dad on the phone, and he said an absolute NO to me trying to come get him or visit him today due to the icy roads.  The road is shiny, but being today is my day off the farm, I've not stepped foot outside yet.  Afraid to after all the problems we've been having.  Dad is doing fine, albeit a little bored as expected.  I'll go visit him tomorrow if roads are clear.

Daniel, Short term memory seems to be a real problem for older folks after surgery, Dad still has issues with his thoughts.

You are right not to pull your luck to bring out in this stuff, and you be very careful and take your time going for fuel!!

I'm sure you know this, but I always ran one set of tires on the very edge of the road where the road has a lot rougher surface, it gives you a better grip then the slick top coat of a well worn road. I once drove from Louisville to Chattanooga at 15 to 20 MPH.doing this when most everyone else was in the ditch.

I am certainly no expert on driving in the snow and ice but I remember my dad teaching me this trick when I started driving.  He grew up in the snow and Ice and it has stayed with me.

Do be careful out on those roads Daniel.  It isn't so much your driving but those who do not know how to drive in those conditions that are the problem.  The short term memory may be from the antithiseia from surgery.  That stuff can be pretty rough on ya especially as you get older.  Glad to hear he is up and walking and things are improving.

Teresa took Mom to her doc appointment today, then by to see Dad.  I've never gotten to talk to the rehab specialist, but Teresa did today.  Dad isn't doing well on his rehab sessions.  He is supposed to do 2 sessions of 72 minutes each.  Today he didn't finish one whole session.  Plus his short term memory is almost non-existent.  They said he was kind of confused this morning.  If he doesn't improve, there's no way he can come home without full time care, and there is no way Teresa & I can do it, as we are already stretched beyond capacity most days taking care of the farm & watching Case.  Half my siblings are in bad health, one too far away, the others just not able due to work or just not willing.  Mom can't stay by herself much longer either if he doesn't get to come home.  We've not been able to think about having our Christmas with our kids & Case, and not sure if we'll even get to.  So late now, and with all the work schedules, might be impossible.  Worst Christmas I've ever looked down the barrel at, but could be worse.  Sometimes the stress gets to me & I'll just break out in tears.  Rough, but we'll get through it.

Since we haven't heard anything in a bit I was hoping he was doing better and would be home for Christmas.  Guess that's not going to happen.  We'll keep you in our thoughts and prayers, hopefully he will turn around and start improving.

At 88 years old, time is catching up with him & Mom, but yes, hopefully they will be with us quite some time yet.   Just how to take care of them I'm not sure, but we'll figure that out when the time comes.

He'll get to come home for Christmas, just maybe for the day though.  We'll just have to wait & see.

Thanks everyone!  They say these kind of things are a test, but I get tested too often it seems. All part of life & I may as well accept that.
