Will, I have downloaded and looked at several of their free products. If there is a catch, I am not seeing it.

It sounds to me that Bill is thinking you've gotten a major issue that wants to remain hidden. I agree.
It's also possible that Wendy has a problem too. Nothing like getting a virus from your wife... :D

Try running the spybho and spydll in that list as well as the virus scanner.

I would also try ccleaner and avast anti virus. If all else fails, you will need to redo your computer by the sounds of it.

Will, Microsoft makes a malicious software removal tool.  I thought there was a specific rootkit removal tool, but I haven't found it yet.  Here is a link to the Microsoft removal tool:

http://www.microsoft...re-removal.aspx

I would also advocate for a product called MalwareBytes http://www.malwarebytes.org/

Some viruses will actually block or hijack antivirus programs, so if you have issues getting to these sites it is a pretty good sign of an infection.

I was just at the Lowes site. Across the top it said: "Sorry we no longer support

IE7. Please update your browser......."

I checked. I have IE10.

Or do I have IE10 that's missing something?

Just strange I thought.

OK, time to get rid of IE, which may be harder that sounds. Reverting to IE9 might not be that bad and may cure some woes.
One big question, did your rig come with IE10 or did you upgrade to it? What version of IE did you start with?

First thing first,
Run ccleaner. http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner
Run spyBHOremover http://securityxplod.../bhoremover.php
Run spyDLLremover http://securityxplod...ydllremover.php
Run spybot S&D http://spybotupdates.../spybot-2.2.exe

Let us know what it finds.

THESE ARE HERE SO I DON'T HAVE TO LOOK FOR THEM AGAIN LATER. Do not do!!!

I've ran as admin the following commands, which are supposed to force the removal of IE9 and IE10 on their entirety:

FORFILES /P %WINDIR%\servicing\Packages /M Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-*9.*.mum /c "cmd /c echo Uninstalling package @fname && start /w pkgmgr /up:@fname /norestart"

FORFILES /P %WINDIR%\servicing\Packages /M Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-*10.*.mum /c "cmd /c echo Uninstalling package @fname && start /w pkgmgr /up:@fname /norestart"

IDK what version was here when I got it, but I bet if I looked in the right

places, I'd be able to find out when it was installed.

Thanks for all the help here so far guys.

I've only got a bit of time here, so I guess I'll tackle this tonight.

If you don't see me around until next week, that means I've really messed up

the computer, and am driving to the nearest staples. :D

I'm not sure I would mess with IE, M$ uses it for running updates and if you revert back to 9 it will just update it's self again.  If Lowes is reporting IE7 and you have IE 10 why revert back to IE9?  I just don't understand.  Just don't use IE and just use Chrome or FF. Your better off anyway.

One more step to Alan's suggestion is to run CCleaner again after you run the other scan programs.  You mainly want to run the registry cleaner of CCleaner to make sure there are no orphan records.

During my poking around last nite, I kept finding people who were having horrible issues with the web until they went back to 9.

May not be the issue, but something to consider.

Ok, I'm going to go under the knife now.

I'll save any reports etc.

Oh yeah, I was just on Paypal, and it also told me my browser was not current. (that was using

IE10) No message there when I used Chrome.

After you get this resolved, it might be best to change your Paypal password...

Will and I have been doing some work on this, he may have found the answer.

http://www.bitcrazed...my-laptop!.aspx

Task host is the one that always seems to hang on shutdown. We are looking into it at least.
