Research in Australia showed that car alarms were about 20% effective at deterring theft.  Interestingly, Koala's are proving 100% effective at deterring car thieves.  

 

Taking note, General Motors, specifically Chevrolet, is looking at the data and considering bringing back the trunk monkey.
