Is there any benefit to running synthetic oil in a 74' B&S? What weight is best to use?

I use straight standard SAE30 in all my old engines.

synthetic oil tend to let the engine run cooler and lasts longer.  I run it in my bike with good results.  That being said I don't think I would run it in a 74 B&S engine. When synthetic oil first came out there was a problem with it eating seals and although you don't hear about the problem now a day's I wouldn't take the chance.  Plus the engine has probably had dino oil in it all of it's like and it is best to stick with the same type oil.

I usually put in what is called for by the manufacturer's manual, but if you don't have one then I would use the SAE 30 like Ben suggested. Can't go wrong with SAE 30.

I also would recomend SAE30 I use it in everything except the snow blowers and my Yazoo Red Rider due to a slight oil consumption issue that 15W30 helps to eliminate.

I've had 2 engines blow after switching to the synthetic. Won't use it again!
