My buddy has a 1450 cub. He mows with it for 25 minutes and it starts spitting and sputtering. And it does this every time he uses it.we have rebuilt the carb.reset the governor. and replace fuel line and filter. What's next? thinking about valve lifter clearance.

You didn't say anything about checking the tank for garbage.  That would be the next thing I would check. When you rebuilt the carb did you pull the welch plugs?  W\hat about the plug?  Have you replaced it?  What does it look like?  It wouldn't hurt to check valve clearance's  although if all the above checks out I think I would start looking at the ignition circuit.

PS: when it starts sputtering have you tried to open the gas cap to see if smoothed out.  Could be a plugged vent.

Does it shut off when it does this?  If so it could be the coil is closing.

Welcome to the forum!

Are you getting fuel flow as it shuts off?  Maybe we have vapor lock going on.
