Here's a John Deere 318, nice tractor that looks sharp.  Show ready indeed!

Is that really what the tractors are worth?  $3250?

A big maybe. Seller did not disclose very much information. Hours? What about the motor? The 318 is a great tractor but they have a huge negative going for them, the discontinued Onan. Great motor but they can be troublesome and expensive. Also because parts are not available they can be ruined very easily. My local JD dealer is putting Honda engines in them.

So if you know for sure the drivetrain is rock solid yes they could bring that kind of money. Our neighbor had a 318 destroyed by fire and his policy allowed for replacement value - He got 4 times that!

When I pay the price, then I say to myself: yes, it's worth. That's my opinion, Ben.

Is a Mercedes Benz 120,000 Euro (exchange is 1 to 1.3352, the customs told me) worth? Therefore I can build a house. Only you can decide for yourself, what worth any-old has - for you.

The gt looks like new and if the blade and the mower belongs to the offer, then it is not so expensive.

I have this prob in my german group, too. People ask you, what's the "worth" - sometimes I tell them 1 to 1 000 000 Euro, you must only find the right purchaser... I think it's better to speak from a commercially available price and that I tell my german askers, too.

edit: commercially available price = cap :bigrofl:

Nice 318. You would have to look at it in person to see how good it really is. If it has low hours -say 3 of 400 then it's worth a lot. If it's got a lot of hours and has been painted and has new rubber only then not so much. There are a lot of parts besides the engine that wear out and they are expensive to replace. Most of the 318's I see here are pretty much beat with a couple thousand hours on them, rusty and tail lights missing etc. A good one is hard to find.

The sad thing is that some crazed Deer fanatic will pay that for it.

The Deer people have convinced themselves that "all things Deere" are superior to anything on the planet.

For it's day, the 318 was not anything special when compared to some of the other GTs of the time.

In fact, the Simplicity 4041 from 1973 and Bolens 1886 from 1971,were/are more than a match for it.

That's 10 and 12 years previous to the release of the 318.

John Deere just had great marketing.  They really should be a study for college kids on marketing, somebody somewhere was brilliant in John Deere's headquarters.

Personally, I doubted whether the price I saw was a plausible value.  Even a green guy would probably choke on that.

im a cub guy but I have to say the frame on a 300 or 400 series deere is the best ive seen. Not to mention their attachments were really well thought out. Simplicity? Lol they were never a top dog.

I think it's over priced by about $700.0 to $1,000.00, but someone may really want and be willing to pay that for it.

As for JD's being the best built or toughest, I would argue that IH, AC/Sim. Bolens, and several other manufactures made just as tough and capable machines as the 318. The Super Cubs (forgot the nubers), 620- 720AC, 4041 Sim, HT20D, HT23 Bolens, 195 Jac-Ford and I could name a few more were some of the best operating and working machines built.!!

Well, you don't sell almost a million units of a particular model by building junk.

Well, you never used to.

Whoever painted that one did a nice job.

OB, your comparison of the 1886 to the 318 is very accurate, the Simp 4040-4041 is not. The JD 400 or 420 would be the comparable model in that comparison. Actually, it might be this one:

When you consider that not too long ago, some  JD Patio tractors sold at auction for $5,000.00+ it's not hard to believe that he won't get very close to what he's asking.

I'm not saying that JD built junk.  They built good tractors then, but that's all they were, good tractors.  With the possible exception of the 140 H3, they were never at the leading edge in features and/or quality of some of the other brands.

After looking at the specs, I'll concede that the 4041 isn't a good match.  However the 4040 is, even though it has 2 Hp less.

jd has biggest frame. Has power steering and attachments were unsurpassed. Three hydraulic levers on 400 series.
