I just found out today my wifes uncle has a 1970 853 he wants to give me. He has a deck, snocaster, and chains to go with it. The only problem is I live in Ma on the Ct border and the tractor is at the southern part of Ct near the shore. I guess I'll be borrowing a truck sometime soon. I know this has a Briggs on it, but hey free is free. Oh yeah, my wife says if I get it I'll have to get rid of another one. Maybe my Wheel Horse 212-5 will be going. It's only a lawnmower anyway. Will this tractor be worth my time and gas? Not sure of the condition yet, although her uncle seems like he takes care of his posessions.

I think it will be worth your time. The 853's are an uncommon model. They were made for two years I think and were more of the economy model because they used a Briggs engine and didn't have the locking rear end. Free is free so I say go for it.

Here is a picture of it. I told him I am not going to be able to come get it. I guess he still wants to get rid of it anyway. If anyone thinks they may be able to pick it in southern Ct I will contact him and let him know.

Who died and made her queen? You know, if you could find a real beater lawn tractor(no deck, broken hood) you could sneqak it home and then tell her your going to get rid of it.

She changed her mind. She was trying to figure out a way for me to pick this one up and keep them all. She's to smart for me to sneak any "junk" home. I like to stay up front and honest with her. Great idea though.

Make this her tractor.

By the way this is not a 853 its a 813 Pup and you dont see the rear weights on them to much. The 813 is not very big to.

Yeah...I found out it was an 813 when I saw the pictures. It has a briggs vertical shaft. It appears to be in nice condition and........free is free.

She wants me to finish the Economy for her. It's still down to a bare frame right now.

Is there a tractor equivalent to the old gun collector trick, of carrying out an empty rifle case and coming home with it filled?  :smilewink:
