This is something I wanted to do for a while now and today is the day I did it.

I have 4 different commonly available mufflers that I put on the same tractor, engine, to compare sound.

I don't have a sound meter so you have to use your ears.

Test tractor has a 15hp cast iron B&S engine.

Pepper top

1" pipe threads

Gravely

made for 16hp Kohler engines in Gravely tractors

Cub Cadet

Made for 12hp Kohler  engines in Cub Cadet GTs, not sure if it's too restrictive for 15hp, 16hp engines???

Large Canister

Used in garden tractors with 16hp Kohlers

That was an interesting test Doug. You really did a great job on the presentation of them all also! Thanks for posting this!

I really like the sound and look of that cub ( horizontal).

I voted vertical cub just for looks, but cub horizontal is close in looks as well, and truly, the horizontal would be best as it will carry sound away from you better.

Nice job. It sounded happiest with the large canister. It also sounds like the valves will need to be looked at. At high revs she sounds like a valve is "floating" a little bit. The tractor is a beauty! Good Luck, Rick

That old Cub Cadet muffler sure looks good on the tractor, though.

I can't believe you turned Unico into Lab Rat, within 1 week. Man I would have hated being your

puppy dog, when you where a wild young Doug. :(  :poke:  :smilewink:

I pick the Cub Cadet version.

It's tough to determine this from videos so I'll ask your opinion.  Which seemed the quietest to you?

IMO

the large canister is the quietest.

the Cub Cadet muffler mounted Horizontal looks the best, almost as quiet as the big muffler.

the Gravely muffler is compact, small, not needing any extra bracing and sounds about the same as the Cub muffler.

the Pepper top, loud and annoying, I hate those mufflers.

I like the Cub Cadet muffler Horizontal best

That Gravely muffler doesn't sound much better than a pepper pot.

The pepper tops are on all my stuff. I voted cub vertical because I have one laying around right now that I pulled from my old Case 222. I returned that tractor back to factory due to the location the PO placed the muffler and plumbing fittings. Boy, you did not want to mow with steel toe boots, like an oven for toes!!! Lol

I think the Gravely would have been better if it was pointed up and had a stack on it. Can you do it over?

Thanks DH! I think the stack muffles a little more when it's wide open. It seems pretty subjective, though. It would sure be helpful if someone had a decibel meter. My own wish is that someone made a muffler the same size as a early 70s Wheel Horse muffler. A Stanley muffler for a Farmal A only shorten it to 12".
