Okay need some help from the gas engine guys. I know my dad is busy with work and I hate bugging him with all these questions and what not so im asking my extended family :D

Ok so here's my issue on ol' red. Its a 10hp kohler with the Carter model N carb. It starts on full choke and when it does start up you have to keep it on choke for it to run. A few seconds will pass and the motor will start dying down regardless if you try to floor or  cover the intake to keep it running. As its drying and about to shut off it smokes a little through the breather right next to the carb. I know itll probably need a carb rebuild here soon but what's everyone's thoughts? Never had a kohler give me a fuss like there before so im hoping its nothing major?

Fuel flow to the carb is insufficient.  More than likely it is right where the fuel enters the carb - usually a 90 degree elbow that catches crud and blocks fuel flow.

As said above, I'd check the fuel flow and give the carb a cleaning but I'd also look for weak spark. Weak spark will cause similar symptoms. A quick check of the points and a look at the quality of spark you are getting should rule that out.

My Cub Cadet just did the exact same thing last week. It would only run with the choke fully closed. Took the carb off and gave it a good cleaning and reinstalled and the old girl runs like a top again. Good luck Kelly

Had the same thing happen with my Ford with 16hp Kohler when I first got it. It would only start and run on full choke and then after a little bit it would die.
I pulled apart the carb, sprayed it out, stuck it back on and it ran great. I didn't even put a kit in it, just used all the old gaskets and didn't have any trouble.

Hope you get it running, good luck
