Hello all, I am a new member here and just wanted to show you my new project I picked up today.  I had posted last night asking about parts availability for the TRA-10D, so this would be my second post.  I got this 1968? 1050 and cant wait to get started in the restoration of it.  It is mostly complete and only missing a few little things.  The previous owner said it quit running on him and he thought it had lost compression.  I pulled the plug out and cranked it over, and it would blow my thumb off the spark plug hole as I cranked it over.  Seems as if this should be enough compression to run.  It was flooding out and not even popping...not sure why, it does have a good spark.  Tomorrow, I guess I will start by checking the valves.  If you guys have any suggestions on what I might be missing, let me know, I am so anxious to get her going as this is my first antique garden tractor and I want to get her rolling.

 

Anyway, here are some pics,  and yes, the colors are all wrong, but the old stuff will have to come off anyway.  My goal is to get everything as close to original as possible.  I also got the snow blower and mower deck in the deal, so I will make good use of this little tractor too.Bolens 001.JPG Bolens 002.JPG Bolens 006.JPG

Besides the bad paint job it looks like a nice complete machine.

 

 

Check your points to see if they need cleaning or adjustment. Point gap is .020

The serial number of the engine can help determine the year.

I had to look thrice when I saw the pics as that's pretty much the same darknight look my 650 came to me with...It also seems better off than you first thought and thats a good thing. Take your time and hurry up, when you do get her up and running well, I'll probably be able to hear your happy shoutin down here! :D

If you have compression and spark, than what your missing is fuel or timing.

If she's flooding out, it probably isn't valves.  I would be more apt to be suspect of float sticking and it flooding that way.

 

Any ways, please keep us up to speed and thanks for taking th time to intro yourself.

Welcome to GTT. Nice tractor. You will find that it is very heavy and powerful. Download the manuals, three free per day, from our Manuals section. Do all the owners manual servicing before you try to start it. If there is water in the oil, you could damage something if you leave it in. The flooding probably is a stuck float in the carb. Looks like you have a nice base for your restoration project.  As Rick said change out all your fluids & filter(s) before attempting to start.   You picked a good time to start with summer winding down that will be a good winter project.
