No numbers that I can find. What engine do you think this is? The starter in out and I need to find one.
It's a statesman mower

offhand, I'd say a Tecumseh...they stamp the model # in the fan shroud. post some more pics of the sides, carb, etc. for better chance to id.

Those were usually a Briggs engine, Sears sold them and I believe that MTD was the manufacturer

That's either a 25xxxx or a 28xxxx Briggs.   The air filter housing is from a smaller model Briggs.  The model, type & code should be stamped in the shroud, just above the sparkplug.

Looks like a 12hp Briggs and Stratton.

Model numbers should be stamped on the front of the Blower housing like this.

Looks like an older Steel ring gear flywheel.Make sure that you get a starter with the correct number of teeth on the starter gear.I THINK is should be a 14 tooth.Pretty sure that the Aluminum and Plastic ring gear used a 16 tooth starter gear.

Post the engine ID code and I'll look up a starter for ya.I would try to rebuild it.Bushings and brushes are easy to replace. And the New starters are Very Very cheaply made. The windings in the new ones are 1/4 the size of a NOS starter.

Yep it is a Briggs. I wonder how many different badges those little MTDs actually wore. That statesman is a new one on me.

No numbers on the shield that I can see. Hopefully I can get to it this weekend, get the side panels off and find some numbers

Yep, Briggs, just replaced one on my 14 hp the other day. I had a spare lying around, found out they have different thicknesses of mounting plates, had to shim the newer one as it was thinner.

I have a 12/38 Weed Eater just like yours other than front sheet metal.
