That is why I like these forums, Thanks Twosteps :thumbs: I was going to add two more 2X6X18's for a total of 4 and the ladder on top. I liked the truss idea, and it was fun to build. Just lay a 2X4 across the hole, mark the angle inderneath, cut, and add 4 3" decking screws. This should work. Plan on braceing the ends to the walls. 

I'm confused...is this what your going to use for a ridge beam, if so it won't work.

I guess where I'm confused is your talking about rafters & no discussion about ceiling joists. A center beam for ceiling joists on top like you have pictured would be ok but not typical. I would as mentioned go with a laminated beam. If you do use the "ladder" method place metal gussets across ALL your 2x4 joints both sides. I would also like mentioned glue your sheathing on both sides as well. The reason your "ladder method" is not typical is it's not engineered to carry a tremendous load vertically & will cost probably a lot more than a laminated beam. Don't get discouraged there is a lot you need to do now. Double plate the top of your walls. I would sheet the walls this will prevent any racking. Brace exterior walls every 8' good with stakes. This will prevent any walls going out of plumb when you fasten your rafter tails. Let your rafter tails run wild, decide on your soffit dimension, snap chalk line on top & cut all the same length. Keep us informed on what your doing   :thumbs:

Your truss is came together nice. One thought I had was, if you would flip it around so that the first diagonal brace would sit down to your bearing point. In the picture it is starting at the top and and then the diagonal force is pulling down from the top instead of pushing down and out to where it sits on the wall.

Sawdust, thanks for the comments, I know this is not tradiotional but I'm trying. At this point I have nothing to sheet the walls with. Tin won't be here till Monday. Once it arrives I'll see if I have enough clearance to add the double plate to the top of the walls (I need to make sure the tin will hang ~ 1" below the top of the foundation. I like the idea of bracing the outer walls prior to installing the rafters (not sure what joists are).

 

Tonight's progress, I took the truss up and thought how in the he$$ was I going to ballance it on the two 2X6's. After pondering I resolved to disemble the truss and make it 24" tall instead of 18.5". The plan is to spread the 2X6's and place the truss in the center and screw the 2X6's to it (almost like what I currently have). I can still go back and add more 2X6X18's if needed.

 

Once I was done re-working the truss, I placed one end on the trailer and the other on the ground, stood it up and bounced my 250 lbs on the center, the only give I noticed was the trailer tire spring (this thing is stiff. Shorty, If the shop was 20' then both ends would be faceing down.

If that beam is going down the center it should be designed to your local code. Around here, that would probably be 40 pounds per square foot. The beam supports 10 square feet per foot of length. That means that the beam should be designed for 400 pounds of load for every foot of length. 18 feet times 400 pounds per linear foot would be 7200 pounds. Your 250 pound test is not valid. Please be very carefull. If this collapses, someone could get killed. 

 

Before going any further make sure the temporary bracing is adequate. You should also have diagonal bracing inlaid into the wall frame. This is very necessary because you are using wrinkle tin. Good Luck, Rick

Not sure there are local codes out here. There are some pretty shabby houses and buildings around. This shop was built Dec 2007 and is still holding up well. I plan on having 4 2X6 and the truss which will make 5 support beams down the center. Two more than the current shop. I appreciate the concern, and I will do my best to mahe sure it is supported well, but I don't think I will be hanging the Ford Ranger from the roof.

Just so everyone knows..... The truss is installed! I have already been up on this measuring for the rafters, 140 1/2 on one side and 141 3/4 on the other. Not bad being 1 1/4" off, I;ll be able to even that up easily in the morning. Even tho this feels really stiff, I will be adding two more 2X6's later on.

I built a truss similar to that to cover the 16 foot span over my garage door and laminated 3 layers of 7/16 osb on both sides using lots of construction adhesive and screws.

This is shaping up to be really nice.  You'll have to put a TV, couch, fridge and a bathroom in it!  That is all a guy needs, right?

I opted to use 2X6's to give this strength. the truss is primarly to add 2' to the ridge. Wasn't planning on the truss to be the primary support but with this configuration I can add more 2X6's.
