My 416S starts most of the time however sometimes the starter seem to grind. I tap the starter and this takes care of the problem. Is the starter worn out? Thanks

Most likely it needs to be dis-assembled and cleaned. It is 40 years old.

Wait...I'm 40! I better have that done.....

Could be the brushes are worn to the point they barely contact the pickups on the armature.  Tapping will get them to contact better to a point.  Gotta be careful tapping the cases on these starters, as the magnets are glued to the casing & you can bust them up.  In fact, already busted magnets could be your problem.
