About a week ago, Neighbor Herby offered me an old compressor that he had in the upstairs of his house, I accepted. The compressor was built by his brother in-law for his sister many years ago.

 

Today, I brought the unit home. Since it was in the upstairs of his house, it had to be taken apart to be taken down.

 

Here is the electric motor that was on it.

 

The tag is faded, and very hard to read.

 

This is the pump. It is made by Curtis.

 

The 15 on the side makes me think it is 15CFM, but it is pretty small?

 

Here is the tag, it says the dimensions of the cylinder, but not how much air it pumps.

 

If the pump is actually 15CFM, I might just put it back together and use it like that. If the pump is under 10CFM or so, then I just use the motor to convert an engine driven one I have for parts. The Motor is only 3/4 HP, and it will be replacing an 11 HP engine, which I do not think will work. Maybe if I change the pulley sizes then I could get it to work?

That is an awesome old compressor!  

 

However, I think it would be closer to 1.5 cfm,  and that would have been when it was new and there was no wear in the cylinder.

What a great find ! I thought my compressor was old but yours beats it ! That would be cool to have a hit&miss engine running it at a show .

That may be a nice restoration project. It's kinda neat looking. At 400rpms I get a gross displacement of about 2.15cfm assuming the bore is 2 1/8.

Be careful with those old tanks as you don't know what they look like on the inside.I have compressors and tanks that could probably be used to make a nice compressor but no electric motors.

I'm with Username on this Ryan. Leather belt drive your talking some serious age on tank and compressor. Novelty at shows with no high RPM's or high pressure wouldn't want to hear you got hurt . It is a neat looking compressor .

Great score, Ryan!  I've got an old compressor that I plan to hook up to a Clinton engine to fill my air tank a bit faster than the little compressor that is on it can do.  I get aggravated running a die grinder for five seconds then having to wait five minutes to recharge.

  Please don't put much trust in the old tank. They can look new on the outside and be rusted out ehough to rupture.

I would have to agree on the cfm size being no bigger than 5. Its basically the size internally of a brigg N engine. Should make a nice sound running 400rpm's. Looks like the tank is an old 100# LP bottle. Just be careful and don't get your self hurt by a homemade bomb.

I agree that the tank could be an accident waiting to happen, but the compressor itself is a really neat old piece of history, great for making a display piece for the engine shows coupled to a VERY slow running vintage Briggs or Clinton type engine..........

Thanks for all of the advice guys! But, does anybody have anything to say about me using the motor to repower a larger compressor? That is the main reason I wanted it.

 

Yes, the tank is a propane tank, and I am a bit weary of it also, it has been welded on before.

 

How much do you guys think that the pump would be worth? I don't need another project.
