I have a 25hp john deere x485 and 4 acres of grass - I would like to get something in the 84" range. Frontier has gm2084r... Could I pull that with my x485? I am open to suggestions outside of getting bigger tractor. Thanks

Looks like they show a 62" mower deck for it.

I think for a finish mower you need 5hp per ft. ???

Welcome to GTTALK!

My opinion is it might be adapted to work but doesn't really seem feasable.  Too much of a good thing can be a bad thing.

I'd be looking at an offset tow behind unit with its own engine.  That won't overtax your tractor nearly as much and it can easily be unhooked for times you don't need it - such as if you have an area with lots of trees or other obstacles.

Good Luck with whatever you decide!

I think 84 inches would be pushing it quite a bit,of course that depends a lot on what your mowing.
Are you looking for a pull type pto driven unit?
That has been a question that has puzzled me. A lot of Gt & sub compacts are rated for 60inch belly mowers but for pull type they drop them back to 48 inch mowers.
Most tractors pulling 84 inch mowers are in the 40-45 hp class.
I mowed 9 acres with a JD318 w 50 inch mower for two years.
This year i am mowing 1&1/2 acres of LAWN with the 318.
The rest I mow with a Ford 1500 with 5 ft mower. thats a 2ooo lb 20 hp . would not want any more on that, it is right up against the governor often.

My JD F935 has a 6' deck out front, and 22hp.  By this, yours should pull it, BUT finish mowers pull more hp than std decks do for whatever reasons.  I wouldn't go beyond 72" myself, even with 25hp.

6' cut can knock down 4 acres pretty darned fast, and would do it faster than an 84" as an 84" would likely require a much slower ground speed.

Been around for along time. Ive owned two tractor and commercial mower dealerships, Gravely, Grasshopper, Dixie Chopper, scag, Farm-Trac And a couple of other misc. brands. 25 horse power is NOT going to run a 7 foot mower. If it's a greens mower, maybe, and I mean maybe.

Look at the PTO hp rating of your tractor and see if it is enough for the 84" deck. I'm also thinking that it's too big and heavy to lift with your 3pt. hitch. If memory serves it will lift 450lbs 1ft. behind the lift links. An 84" deck will likely be too much for it to lift and would also require a lot of front ballast to be safe if you could lift it.

The JD X series, equipped with the rear 540 pto, are matched to a 48" rear finish mower. Going to a 60" would require a much slower speed. A 72" finish mower would be equipped with a gearbox much too large for your JD, the pto on your tractor would be the first thing to give. (Break)

Wow. a bunch of great ideas. thanks. my x485 currently has the 62" deck. I had a JD 4110 with a 72" cut but the tractor was much to large for me to load and haul back-and-forth to my parents home to mow their grass. Hence i bought a smaller unit.

I really like the idea about the reel mower. Do they need sharpened often and can just anybody do this?

I can't help you on your direct question, sorry. I will mention though that my 12hp Kubota has no problem pulling a very heavy 48" finish mower. It will actually mow faster than I want to drive.

Keep in mind that if you get too big of a mower you will cut into your seat time!!
