Jd 185 Motor Problem

Well just a week ago i was announcing to the world that i was only collecting wheel horses and was going to tear down my jd for parts and scrap the rest, am i nuts or what???? ( yes i know theres a name for it , but be kind) but tonight i come home with a nice one owner jd 185, and brand new wagon, it just stopped on the old guy i got it from and he just went out and bought a new one, came with a wagon which he threw in the deal for a total of $350, most of my horses are 8 speeds which my son hates so hopfully he will like the hydro on this unit, wish it was a kohler but its a kawasaki fc540 17hp? anywas it turn over great, i smell gas, but checked and no spark, any thoughts on this motor issue?i am thinking coil, i dont think it has a ignition moduel

That engine is in the same class as the early K series Kohlers. Bulletproof, virtually.

Coil is around $80.  My bro-in-law put one on his 165 a few weeks ago.  First check all safety cutoff circuits.  His had spark, but very weak.
