Good Morning,

I am trying to decide which direction to go and am looking for some advice. These two tractor are 1987's  but each has its issues. This is a family deal and I will get my pick of the two and the other will likely be sold. The 316 has an 18hp Onan engine with 750 hours on it and is leaking oil. A Deere shop has quoted $700 to replace all seals and gaskets. Beyond that it runs well.

The Ingersoll has a 16hp Onan with 430 hours. It will not start currently but when I did run it a few years ago it was running rough and will certainly need some attention to get it back functioning.

Does anyone care to offer opinion as to which direction I should go?

Thanks,

Bill

In most cases you don't need to replace all seals and gaskets so the price for fixing that oil leak seems a lot high. The 316 is a stripped down version of the 318. It's a good solid GT. I'm not familiar with the Ingersoll. I'd look at what you need to do with the tractor, what attachments you need to buy to do it and the cost and availability of those attachments.

Bill, I would lean towards the 316 because you know what it needs. If you shop around you should get it repaired for less. The 446 is a great tractor, but it maybe expensive to repair.

I would go with

the 316 . Chances are it might only have 1 oil leaking seal

Thanks for the thoughts thus far. OK a little more info from the service department. They said that most of the oil leak is at the bottom of the engine and thus will need to remove the engine to replace those gaskets & seals. Since that is the biggest expense in all of this they are recommending replacement of the rest of them while it is out.

I agree with Brian. With some hand skills you can you can chance the seal itself. And as Steve said, you don'i know what the Ingersoll engine will do next. It's more risky, I think.

It's a tough dilemma. The Ingersoll is low hours. I still think you need to look at your application and determine which one suits your needs. The 316 only has one hydraulic spool which is one of the differences between it and the 318. Maybe you should make an offer and have both of them!

All things equal and one is known and the other is unknown - I would pick the known tractor.  In this case it is the 316.
