I was wanting your guys opinions before I venture any further to this deal. I have an offer of possibly trading one of my 400 series Case's for a nice John Deere 318 with around 800 hours. It comes with a deck only. I will include one of many decks I have with the Case. I was curious on everyone's opinions. Should I do it? I like the idea of mowing with power steering. If I did this the 318 would become my primary mower. Right now I mow with my 226 but could easily set its job solely for garden plowing and snowblowing. Before I had any Case's and was all JD, I always wanted a 318. Just never could find one worth getting. Most are run down into the ground around here and they want a fortune.

This should be interesting. The 448 and 318 have their differences but they are a lot alike. 18 horse Onan in both. I like the big rear tires on the Case. And the power steering on the John Deere.  If the GT's were both real nice, price would be about the same. Why choose one? It is really hard to say one is better than the other. I actually have both and I decided that I will keep both. When I bought the 318 a few weeks ago I considered selling the Case but I just couldn't do it. Both of these Garden Tractors are very heavy duty, made well, are very capable of doing the job and operate real nice.

Since you always wanted a 318 and you have more than 1 Case 400 series I'd say you should do the deal. A 318 with only 800 hrs that has been well maintained is getting to be a rare tractor. A lot of them have been worked into the ground at this point. You won't have any trouble selling a good running 318 if you don't like it.

Well the 318 is pretty nice as is my big wheel Case. I have 2 Big Case's and I use them both but wouldn't lose anything trading one off. I have both a sleeve hitch and 3 point for my Case's. So as for rear attachments I'm good. Buddy told me to offer my 226 but it is too good and has only 500 hours. That one is staying with me for a real long time. If I had the money I would buy the 318 but I don't. The offer to sacrifice one is there waiting for my input. I hate decisions like this!

That is exactly what is troubling the most. 318's with low hours in good shape is a rare thing around here in JD country. No one wants to sell them and when they do they are rode hard and hung up wet.

I'm still pondering this while my 13 year old is practicing running weld beads with my stick buzz box. I think he is getting better than me at this. I'm gonna have to step up my game a bit. I think tomorrow I may go look at it. Drive it around and make the decision then. Its only 5 minutes away from me.

As much as I hate to tell somebody to trade for a JD, I think that for YOU it might be the better way to go. After all, you say you always wanted one, and you will have no problem selling it to buy another 400 series (or whatever else) if you happen not to like it.

What is the 4XX Case you are thinking of trading. We have a couple 318's and they are a fantastic mowing machine with the PS and the Hydro Trans. The hours are low, especially for IN.. Never having owned a big wheel Case, I can't say what you are giving up, I would go for it.

The JD decks make an awfully nice cut!  Power steering is something you will fall in love with immediately!

It would be a 446 for the 318. I don't know yet. I think after I have it in front of me, I will be able to decide. I know the 318 is nice but the 446 is a beast. At one time I had all John Deere's. The only thing I will gain is the power steering. They both take 3 points and both are hydraulic. Although the 318's hydraulics are down right puny compared to the capabilities to the Case. Not saying they are not capable but the Case system is very large. Its a tough comparison since I don't really mow with the Case I'm trading and plan on mowing with the 318.

If the 318 has the 50" deck or the replacement 48" deck, it will do as nice as job as a Case. The older 46 decks were not at the same level as the Case decks. My opinion only.

grt the 318 it will bring more money resale. It has easy to find attachments. You can get any part for it any day of the week and honestly those big wheels like the 448 I had wont pull poo. If you weight that 318 its like a mule.

Eric,

Looks like you are getting the go ahead on the John Deere.  I think you will be very happy with the 318. It is good you still will have one Big Wheel Case.  In my opinion, both tractors are the best of the best, you cant go wrong.

I passed on it. It was nice and smooth but I really didn't want to give up my 446. I like it too much. I think I will wait and save up some hobby cash to get one. I just can't see being without my current collection. Unless of course a 420 came my way. Then maybe I could let one go. Thanks everyone for their advice. It was good hearing opinions of people who have experience with both. The closest I have is the 140 H1 I had a while ago.
