What destroyed the engine is the one balance gear came off it's stub shaft & it became a grenade. They are held onto their respective stubs with a simple circlip. There are 2 balance gears in these. All looks to be accounted for. I take these balance gears out & never have a problem. There is a method to create near perfect balance by adding weights. I'll see if I can find that info. I never used the added weights though....and never a problem.

I agree. Do all of the horizontal Kohler's have these gears?

ALL newer quietline engines do. The "Q" in the model number, like K321`A"Q"S designates quietline series. I see an older Kohler now & then that didn't come with balance gears.

So olcowhand you think id be ok leaving these out in a rebuild? i sure dont need another failure & the more parts you have the more you could break! previous owner informed me that this perticular engine ran rough right after rebuild but it ran that way forever!

I've taken them out of many engines & ran them for years...NO problems. Vibes increase just slightly, not enough to be of importance. I ALWAYS take them out when into a K engine.

Go to this page, then click on the engine model desired. A full shop manual can be downloaded, chock full of pics & such.
