thats exactly what happened , the top half broke off like mine did . i had piece to weld back on though. I figure they drilled two holes for little cotter pins but it weakened the rod, especially when the neutral safety switch gets sticky and it's hard to switch back n forth betw hi - low n neutral 

It is in low now right?

yes the lever back is low forward is high

Nice Jake you have there! On the frame just ahead of the left front tire is the tag for the model #. Should be 09JC3336 or 37.

Have a blast with it, I love that foot pedal on mine!
