I've seen the Nova II Transistorized ignition module of Ebay and wondered if they could be used on my Onan B48 on my JD420, and also on my Kohler K341 on my Ford LGTs, etc.

Even though the Onan is a twin cylinder, I'm pretty sure both plugs fire at the same time... it's just that one is at the top of the exhaust stroke so nothing ignites.  I've had motorcycles that do the same thing.  Is this correct?

The Onans aren't too hard to tune up, but the points and condensor typically sell for $30 to $35 and the Nova II is $13, so I'm ahead money wise if nothing else.

I've also heard of people doing things like the Point Saver systems on the Kohlers, so if the Nova or similar system won't work, can the Point Saver be put on the Onan?

Thanks,

Smitty

The Onan twins don't have a waste spark, as the points are driven off the cam, but they do fire both cylinders at the same time.  I have no knowledge of the ignition modules you mentioned.

If your flywheel only has one magnet it will work.

No magnet at all on the outside, and inner magnets are just for charging stator.  Onan uses 12V battery powered coils.

Great!!  Sounds like something I ought to try... I'll probably have to pull the engine to get to it, but that's okay.

Olcowhand is right what you want is point saver. Kind of pricey. Kirk Engines Inc.carries them.

I installed the http://www.kirkengin...hp#PointSlayer on my 120.  Spark is great.. too bad that the carb problems is preventing me from fully enjoying this.

I know this works on the Onan engines... http://www.kirkengin....php#PointSaver

and this would be the direction I would go on an Onan powered machine.

Have you considered dropping Kirk an email?  I have found his service and products to be excellent.

I've heard of Kirk Engines and Point Saver... thanks for sharing the links to the site.  I'll look at it more carefully--using the PS would be easier than putting the Nova II system on.

The Pointslayer was crazy easy so I am sure the Pointsaver would be cake. I love the stuff from Kirk and would gladly do business with him again.  He now takes paypal, too.
