I think the easiest thing to do is keep the old wiring thats there and use it as just a starter to get the tractor turning over. The On/Off of the coil will be on a separate system with just a simple on/off toggle switch.

All you need to do is install the coil somewhere on the tractor and install wire from the points to the negative side of the coil (Black wire) and the other wire (Positive side of coil) will go to the one terminal on the switch. (White) The other wire will need to be attached to the positive terminal of the battery (Red)

So, could I just use the parts (NAPA 7-01634 and 7-01338) and which coil do I need?  Also, will these points fit in the original "box"?

Thanks,

Bert

Can anyone tell me exactly which points, condenser and coil will work for this conversion?

You will Need a YQ11 points kit  Its your lucky day, there's a couple on ebay for a steal!

Any 12volt automotive style coil will work. Just make sure its the one with an internal resistor.

Well, I finally managed to get the flywheel off thanks to krsword!  The magneto looks fine but is there a way to test it?

Did you check the wires? Looks like that one was taped a few times and may have a short. How strong are the magnets on the flywheel?

If I fix that wire can I still test it with a sparkplug connected to the plugwire while cranking the engine?

So, I'm still trying to figure out the battery ignition option. If I get a regular coil, can I still use the original points and condenser set? Or do I need different points and do they go in the original box?

The OEM YQ11 Points and condensor can be used with a battery ignition system.

I think your looking too far into this, its really quite a simple procedure to get a coil installed on these.

Thanks Bolens 1000,

I thought I needed a different points and condenser setup if I'dd go with a regular coil.  Getting a new point and condenser, install them in their original location and then instead of the wire going to the magneto it will just go to the external mounted automotive coil which will have a separate on/off switch somewhere correct?

Here's a very simple wiring schematic.

Thanks guy's, I got the points set on EBay once they come in I'll test them with the original magneto, if there's no spark I'll just stop at advance Auto parts and pick up a coil.

Finally had some time to play with the Husky, I have a spark!  Found a nice start push button at Advance Autoparts and wired it in.  Next step is cleaning the carb, will keep you posted.  Anyone knows what kind of connectors I need for the coil?
