I just uploaded the manual for it to the manuals section. Here is a direct link to it:

Magnum 8 - Manuals - Garden Tractor Talk

Hope this helps you figure it out. If it doesn't, some pictures might be helpful.

Caseguy , I have the same Kohler Magnum Service Manual for 8 , 10 , 12 , 14 , 16 HP brand new not some reprint I ordered from OPEENGINES.COM . my engine should have the 3 amp charging stator ( 2 poles ) or 1.25 amp charging stator ( 2 poles )
maybe the 15 amp stator and rectifier - regulator . ?

Is there a way to get a pic of the left side of the engine shroud, looking from the flywheel end of the engine? As near as I can tell from the drawing, there should be a single, small black wire going to the keyswitch for either the 1.25 amp or the 3 amp unregulated system. If you have the optional lighting circuit, there will also be a yellow wire coming out with the black one. There is no way to tell which system you have unless you have the tractor manufacturers book and it specifically says which one was used. Of course you could take the flywheel off and look at it. That's the best I can do without seeing it. Sorry I'm not being more helpful.

According to service bulletin 301G the 1986 308-8 has a 1.25 amp charging system.

Adding - a look at the wiring diagram shows the AC circuit (dark green wire) for the lights plus a rectified but unregulated circuit (white wire) to charge the battery. I don't know how they come up with 1.25 amps.

I don't have a copy of that service bulletin. The one that I quoted was from the Kohler website. Sorry if I've misled.
