As I mentioned in another post, I just got a John Deere STX 38, Model M00STXB010979 riding mower with Gear Drive 4 speed.  Do not have an operator's manual.  My question is should the clutch be engaged when turning the solenoid switch on to engage cutting blades?  Also, is it ok to leave blades engaged when backing up?  Thanks.

Clutching is not required when engaging the blades.

There is no problem with backing up with the machine with the pto engaged.

Some mowers have a safety switch that will kill the engine if the mowing deck is engauged and you try to operate in reverse.....just saying.
