What is the proper adjustment for the deck drive belt on a JD314 . My mule drive doesn't have a readable decal . I've been turning knob by hand until tight . Is this correct?

I don't have a deck or mule drive Larry. I'll check my manuals tonight to see if I've got anything that will help.

I have the "41 and 48 Rotary Mowers" Operator's Manual. It has some pictures and text on the belt tightening mechanism. If I get a chance tonight, I will scan it in and send it to you.

Here is a picture of the front of the mule drive from my 318. It should be similar to your 314.

Is this what you're asking about? If so, this is where you adjust the belt tension.  The little black rod near the top of the long vertical slot should be in the top white range (INITAL BELT TENSION) when the belt tension is correct. As you can see, my belt needs to be tightened.

If the rod is in the next lower white range (RE-TENSION), you need to turn the middle bolt clockwise (it's supposed to be a knob but mine is missing).

To install the deck, turn the center bolt counter-clockwise to get the little black rod in the lowest white range.

Sorry about all the words, just trying to be complete.
