Well I got 20 feet done and iot started smoken under the hood and out the front..  I turned it off and oil was pouring out all over the engine.. I checked the oil level.. its at least a liter over full... i will check it tomorrow... maybe..  i hope its a cheap fix.. supposedly this is my fault.. hahaha i might end up with another 317.. If so.. its getting a v6 or a inline 4....

My Onan that was on my Massey w/FEL would do the same now & then.....huge cloud of smoke, and I mean huge.  It would send a mess of oil up the crankcase vent into the air filter housing.  Not overfilled in my case & on level ground.  I need to check the reed in the breather assembly.  I also had a Cub Cadet with Kohler twin that would do the same thing, but usually on an incline tilted to the left I believe.

Really sounds as if the float failed or stuck open. Excess gas running down into the crank, maybe?
I sure wouldn't work it until you track the problem down.

If it does end up being the float, you can tell your Dad it was the cheap gas he's been using... See if you can get a response... :rolling:

This is level ground and enough oil came out to puddle on the dirt.. If this storm gets out of our area for tomorrow i will go drag it to the house..

I can't remember if the KT 17 has a mechanical fuel pump or a vacuum pump? If mechanical, it could be leaking into the crankcase. Does the oil smell like gas?

I agree with all the above , to much oil or gas in the crankcase

In those KT17's the breather reed fails and it spews oil all over the engine. This is a common complaint. The PO of my 317 told me this happened when mowing every once and a while for no apparent reason. It's a series 1 engine. I bought a new breather reed/plate assembly which will hopefully prevent this happening again. when the engine goes back in the tractor it will be clean and I hope the new breather prevents the problem. The entire engine compartment was soaked in oil.

Do you have a link to this part so i know im looking at the right part... Thanks in advance..

I will get the machine drained of the extra oil tomorrow.. Today was a recliner and meds day.. I might have scored a tiller for my 112 so i may just get this thing running (with out smoke or oil pouring out) and i will use my own stuff..

Part no. AM38415 - Breather kit (valve cover plate with a reed valve)  about 20$ can. Go to jdparts.com and enter 317 in the model no. search. It looks like this is a replacement for some sort of pop up valve arrangement which was original equipment.
