Java has been known to have problems, it got to the point Apple doesn't even include it with OSX anymore.

One thing I would recommend if you can is investing in a Mac on your next computer purchase. I also have kids on the computer. 2 of which are youngin's. I have no spyware or antivirus and have had no problems in 8 years. It was a little more pricey than a PC but after 8 years has paid for itself. These kids can't screw it up even if they tried. It locks down every setting and download privilege with a password.

You can buy a Mac Mini for about $600. It doesn't come with a DVD drive, monitor, mouse or keyboard, but regular PC items will work with it. I use a cheaply monitor, from Bestbuy, a MS mouse, and my old iMac keyboard, I did buy an Apple SuperDrive for it, and I use WD ext drives for extra storage. Most of the extra items I already had.
