But was there something between the metal and the cushion? Usually there is a wood backing that the fabric is stretched over. Then the wood has bolts that hold it to the metal frame. Thats what it looks like in the parts book.

The seat pan holds the 2 cushions, bottom and back.
The bottom and back are made of a metal backing with foam padding covered by the outer fabric(vinyl).
These 2 cushions are attached to the seat pan.
3 pieces of metal altogether, the seat pan and 2 cushion backings.

The early seats were one piece cushion and also one piece covering.

The guy that recovered it, was able to save the original cushion and just add the lost thickness back.

So I have to make the metal backing that fits the seat pan? Anyone have any demisions or just make it a little smaller than the pan?

Dan - It's just the seat pan, not metal or plywood backing. The vinyl has a hem sewn in it that a cord passes through; in a sense it is tied onto the seat pan.
