Today, I bought a 1982 317 John Deere tractor (C317L195153M?), I bought it very cheap.  (No, I have not had time for pictures but will ASAP). The tractor is a very good shape other than it has no engine or hydraulic pump.It has front mule drive and

deck. What type and size engine would be a good replacement and easily adapted to drive shaft. I did get the flywheel and adapter in the purchase. I would even consider trying to install a small three or four cylinder motor. I have a small front-end loader I plan installing on this tractor,

What type and size of rear wheels will fit on this tractor?

Does anyone off-hand know the bolt pattern and the needed off-set on the wheels?

All suggestions and comments are appreciated,

oldman

John Deere offered an Onan P218 as a direct replacement for the Ill fated KT-17 Kohler Series I, so you could go that way. Several Co. offer Honda re-powers for the 317. You could drop a Yammar or Kubota Diesel in it.

If you are going to put a loader on it, you might want to upgrade to power steering.

Good Luck !!

I have just been reading about the power steering and I am sure no matter what engine I go with (Kuboto Diesel has a nice ring to it), I will install power steering. I am much too old to fight with the loader any more. ANy suggestions as to the easiest way to install Power Steering on 317?

Thanks for your Reply,

The best way is to use this column out of a 318. Here is what you want to find, but they can be found cheaper then this.

For Reference,

http://www.ebay.com/...=item589ff04891

There are other brands of equipment that also used them.

Thanks for being so helpful. I thought that price was a little high myself.
