I recently bought a 1970 Sears compact serial #917-25480 at an auction.  It's been sitting outside for a long time, but I feel I can get it running again.  My problem is as you turn steering wheel it will slip and you can turn it all the way and it will slip outside steering gears.  It looks like gear on bottom of steering shaft is worn down.  I doubt there is any way to adjust or fix except to replace sttering shaft. Does anyone know where I can get a steering shaft?  Do you know of any other lawn tractor that used same steering gear? I'd appreciate any help anyone can give me.  Thank you

You may be able to weld up the teeth if you can't find a replacement. Good Luck, Rick

y'know, you might just be able to broaden your search.  i'm thinkin' sears didn't make sweeping changes across models and years, and as such, you may be able to use the same gear from a different year or model #?

There is one cheap on Ebay right now. I went to Sears parts direct and entered your model and the one on Ebay, they both are the same part number. Good luck

The one on Ebay says it was cut off. Can you remove the bottom gear from these shafts and only replace the gear?

Check if the gear is held on by a pin. There are catalogs of just gears such as "Boston Gear Company". I haven't bought from them in over 25 years but they were amazing. The Epay one looks worn to me. Try our sponsors. You might also try NAPA. Good Luck, Rick

Do you have pics of the carnage? I know the pin the section gear rides on can get worn and allow for a lot of motion under there... No one seemed to want to grease them.

I don't see any pin in gear, it must be pressed on.  I don't have any pictures, but the part the gear rides on looks good, still has paint on it.  The gear on end of steering shaft looks worn down and thin.

I was at an auction today and saw an  old Sears 725 I would love to have. I was told it had already been sold but not picked up.
