The Tecumseh 8-18 HP manual is a great one. You could be having carb issues as those carb wear the butterfly shaft or bushings and they suck air. Bet you spray some carb cleaner around that shaft and rpm's will change/smooth out.

Hope you didn't remove the center main jet when you cleaned it. They are screwed in carb, then drilled at factory. Once removed you can't get them lined back up and carb will be too lean and you will get rpm  "surge" or "hunting". There is a way to cut a new cut a new slot in it, can't rememebr where I saw it at, or replacement ones can be bought.

Start with your adjustment screws on jets at 1 1/2 turn out, then fine tune from there.

You called it.  I did remove the centre main jet/emulsion tube.. who knew.  I just ordered a Genuine Tecumseh carb rebuild kit from a local shop.  I know I could have found one cheaper on eBay, but.  I think it's best to support local shops.  A bit more money perhaps, but, so what.

Hopefully that will cure the surge issues.

Hopefully the kit has the new "main jet/emulsion tube" in it.  If not, maybe a drill motor and a file can make the needed grove.

Thanks to all for the help.

I don't think the kits had the service nozzle in them.

Here is a source for them. I've bought a couple from them, and had

good results.

I guess I'm daft.  I can't find a way to attach a photo.

Sure, in the lower right corner of the reply box is "more options"
Click there and at the bottom of the new screen is a spot to choose your pic and upload.

There is one good info here too. http://gardentractor...file-uploading/

Here is a photo of my SS12 I took the same day I got it.  The photo is upside down and I can't find a rotate function.

Nice 12, that's a real workhorse you have there.

Thanks for the pic, I got it flipped for you.

Thanks for flipping the photo!

I managed to get it to idle.  I marked the location of the carbs idle passage on the main jet, then I filed a small grove in the jet so that it's drilling could feed fuel to the idle passage.  Seems to have worked, the mixture screw is responsive.  Thanks again for the info.
