Hi, I'm basically new to lawn/garden tractors.  I have a Bolens 1050 with a few extra bits, but the mower is missing to many parts to make it feasible to fix.  I just purchased a Sears SS12, 917.25510, with a mower deck.

The Bolens, I traded work for.  The Sears, I bought.  Nether were to be collectors, I need to mow my lawn.

As you might imagine, I have some questions... I'm sure to be followed by others

Can anybody tell me the part # of the packing "O" ring in the gas shut off valve?  And, or, a possible way to stop it leaking?

Does any one belt maker, make a better belt?

TIA

H

Welcome to GTT. You have two very good tractors. You can download three manuals for free per day in our manuals section. The "o" is probably generic that you can match at an auto parts store or go to Harbor Freight and get one of their "O" Ring assortments for about $10.  http://www.harborfre...result?q=O Ring

Your questions are always welcome and we like to see pictures. Good Luck, Rick

Yes, that is a very capable pair of tractors. Some guys in the past would use "packing rope" to replace, but I agree that most places would sell an o ring that would work.

Welcome to GTTalk.  I would suggest pulling the old o ring and taking it to a good hardware store or a large tractor dealer and having the parts guy match it for you if you don't want to invest in an assortment.

Welcome aboard! Once you get the mowing done, I guess you can get back to collecting :smilewink: Hopefully it won't take much to sort those issues out and oh., :wewantpics:

Hi redb4 and  :welcome: to our group.

I agree with Ben, check a local hardware or if you have a Lowes nearby they have a good assortment of "O" rings.

As far as belts I would say Gates for quality.

Whoops...had to edit...I almost forgot...take some :camera: of your tractors...Thanks

Hi thanks for the Welcome.

The packing "O" ring appears to be # 008, it hasn't leaked yet ;)

I went with Dayco belts as they are available locally.

When I first fired up SS12, it was not well.  I cleaned the carb and put it back together.  Made 2 new gaskets, and reinstalled it.  It's way better now.  But I cant get it to idle smoothly.  The governor keeps pulling for more revs.  I don't know if this is normal

Can anybody point me in the direction of a downloadable  manual on how to tune the engine.. Tecumseh 12 HP  sears model 143.592022

Thanks

H

The Tecumseh 8-18 HP manual is a great one. You could be having carb issues as those carb wear the butterfly shaft or bushings and they suck air. Bet you spray some carb cleaner around that shaft and rpm's will change/smooth out.

Hope you didn't remove the center main jet when you cleaned it. They are screwed in carb, then drilled at factory. Once removed you can't get them lined back up and carb will be too lean and you will get rpm  "surge" or "hunting". There is a way to cut a new cut a new slot in it, can't rememebr where I saw it at, or replacement ones can be bought.

Start with your adjustment screws on jets at 1 1/2 turn out, then fine tune from there.
