Briggs had that 15 hp engine for one year only.

Cat, I have been told that it is the same engine, B&S just kept bumping the HP rating.

That is how I understand it too.  Different HP but identical engines....all parts being the very same.

My Unico 15 (HP) was a 72 model.  I'd have to check the code #.

Keep in mind, I'm only going by what is printed on the covers of the MTD owner's manuals.

I've heard the statement about those all being the same engine with revised hp ratings several places.  If that's true, it could have easily been running changes during production.  With the manuals' text being set in advance of the model year, it wouldn't surprise me at all that it would be a different hp rating.  Out of curiosity, do you know if it was purchased late in the year of '72.  Maybe it was a '73??? Did it have the model number indicating it was a '72 as in 142-990?

The "late in the year" question assumes tractor model years started in the fall like automotive model years.  Was that even the case at the time?

Just trying to learn.

That 145-990 in the model number indicates it's a '75.  Or at least the dash is off a '75. :D

I have seen 14, 15 and 16 hp all with the same block and carb. Numbers on the fan cover basically the same model. The horse power wars started back then. Finally the class action lawsuit in the 2000s changed the inflated HP ratings to inflated CC ratings.

I've got two 1972 Unico 990s.  One with starter/generator, one with starter/alternator.  Both engines are labeled 15 HP, with a 1972 build date.  Interesting, isn't it?

We've been lucky enough to get some tractors with the original sale receipt , so far in every case the tractor has been built and sold with in a couple of months of the engine  build date. So going by the engine is pretty accurate .
