I'm starting to gather parts and do body work on my MTD 990 .

I've been thinking of what color I want to paint it when I get all the bugs worked out .

Mine was originally painted red and I believe it was a Farm King ., I've got a few Cub Cadets in red and want to change it up a bit with a different color .

I've seen the Unico's painted in green and thats a nice color , but I'm not a big fan of green ....lol

I've seen some MTD's painted in blue , and thats the color I want to paint mine  .

Heres a couple of pictures I've found of different paint schemes in blue .

Anyone know if  MTD actually painted any 990's blue or are these MTD's repainted incorrectly  ?

And if MTD did  paint 1500's or 990's blue what name color of blue did they use ?

TIA , Jess

.

MTD did use a blue. Actual MTD labeled machine, not a re-badge. Teal green is close.

Here's a pic I scanned from the '71 MTD sales brochure.

As far as I know, the blue and white was definitely a '71 color and maybe '72?  I think I saw someone post about a blue '72 before but with no confirmation.

Your top picture is the correct paint scheme on the tractor but the blue appears too dark.  The color Cat posted is very close to the original ones I've seen.

The looks brown in your pic but the brochure shows the 42" deck in black.  The 32" deck on the smaller 8hp tractors is actually red like the hp number in the hood stripe.  In fact, almost all the implements in the brochure are red.

I like that blue in your first pic.  Here's "Electric Blue".

The MTD color for 72 was all over silver with black engines and Jim is correct, the decks have always been black.

I think the blue and white is a sharp combo!, kinda like the Whites , not the same old colors

Ok guys  , thanks for the info and pictures .

I'm gonna go with the blue ( teal or turquoise ) and white , it is a nice looking color combination .

Should look good with new MTD decals . :rocker2:

I did notice that the blue one is a 15HP and mine is a 16HP. Maybe color changed at different HP??

I'd go with a blue that's appealing to me. Teal or Turquoise are more green to me. Are you trying to 'Restore' it?

I'm not one of those rivet counters when it comes to restorations . As long as it is close to original in appearance , thats good enough for me .

I don't plan on entering it in any tractor shows .

Ok forget the teal or turquiose ....A darker blue maybe ..

That said , I'm a big blue UK basketball fan ......seems that there colors are close..... :D

I like that blue and white color scheme.  Good luck with the project and I definitely want to see it later.

Not completely accurate , Dads 72 was purchased new and is a silver 16hp

Brian ,what is the code on your 73? wonder if it was real early and had left overs from 72 ?

Lets see how close "Electric Blue" is to UK blue.

blue electric.jpg  uk.jpg

Pretty darned close, and the metallic gives it more flash.
